1. जसोदा हरि पालनैं झुलावै।
हलरावै, दुलरावै मल्हावै, जोइ-जोइ कछु गावै॥
मेरे लाल कौं आउ निंदरिया, काहैं न आनि सुवावै।
तू काहैं नहिं बेगहिं आवै, तोकौं कान्ह बुलावै॥
कबहुँ पलक हरि मूँदि लेत हैं, कबहुँ अधर फरकावै।
सोवत जानि मौन ह्वै कै रहि, करि-करि सैन बतावै॥
इहिं अंतर अकुलाइ उठे हरि, जसुमति मधुरैं गावै।
जो सुख सूर अमर-मुनि दुरलभ, सो नंद-भामिनि पावै॥
अर्थ- प्रस्तुत पद में सूरदास जी ने श्रीकृष्ण की बाल क्रीड़ाओं का मनोहरी व सजीव वर्णन किया है। सूरदास जी कहते हैं कि श्रीयशोदाजी कृष्ण को पालने में झुलाकर सुलाने का प्रयास कर रहीं हैं। वे कभी पालने को हिलाती हैं, कभी श्रीकृष्ण को दुलार करती है अर्थात प्यार करके पुचकारती हैं और चाहे जो कुछ भी उनके मन में आता है वे गाने लगती हैं। उलहाना देती हुई कहती हैं- “निद्रा! तू मेरे लाल के पास आ ! तू झटपट क्यों नहीं आती ? देख मेरा कन्हैया तुझे बुला रहा है।”माँ के इस प्रकार गाने से श्याम कभी पलके बंद कर लेते हैं, कभी होठो को फड़काने लगते है। उन्हें सोते समझकर माता यशोदा चुप हो जाती है, और इससे दूसरों को भी संकेत कर के मौन रहने के लिए कहती हैं। इसी बीच में श्याम आकुल होकर जाग जाते हैं, उनको जागा हुआ देखकर माँ यशोदा फिर से मधुर स्वर में गाने लगती हैं। सूरदास जी कहते हैं जो सुख देवताओं के लिए भी दुर्लभ है, उस सुख का माँ यशोदा प्रतिदिन रसपान करती हैं।
Meaning- In this verse, Surdas Ji has vividly described the enchanting childhood activities of Shri Krishna. Surdas Ji says that Shri Yashoda Ji is trying to lull Krishna to sleep by rocking him in a cradle. She sometimes rocks the cradle, sometimes caresses Shri Krishna with love, and sings whatever comes to her mind. She scolds, saying, “Sleep! Come to my dear boy! Why don’t you come quickly? Look, my Kanhaiya is calling you.” From his mother’s singing, Shyam sometimes closes his eyes, and sometimes his lips twitch. Thinking he has fallen asleep, Mother Yashoda stops singing and signals others to remain silent. Meanwhile, Shyam, feeling restless, wakes up. Seeing him awake, Mother Yashoda starts singing sweetly again. Surdas Ji says that the joy which even the Devtas(divine beings) find rare, Mother Yashoda enjoys daily.
2. खीझत जात माखन खात।
अरुन लोचन, भौंह टेढ़ी, बार-बार जम्हात।।
कबहुँ रुनझुन चलत घुटुरनि, धूरि धूसर गात।
कबहुँ झुकि के अलक खैंचत, नैन जल भरी जात।।
कबहुँ तोतरे बोल बोलत, कबहुँ बोलत तात।
सूर हरि की निरखि सोभा, निमिष तजत न मात।।
अर्थ- सूरदास जी ने प्रस्तुत पद में श्रीकृष्ण की बाल-चेष्टाओं का वर्णन किया है। सूरदास जी कहते श्रीकृष्ण माखन खाते हुए झुंझला रहे हैं। श्रीकृष्ण के नेत्र लाल है। भौहें तिरछी है और वे बार-बार जम्हाई ले रहे हैं मानो उन्हें नींद आ रही है। घुटनों के बल चलते हुए उनकी पैजानियों से रुनझुन की मधुर आँवाज़ निकल रही है तथा उनके शरीर पर धूल भी लग गई है। कभी झुककर अपने बाल खींच लेते हैं जिससे नेत्रों में आँसू आ जाते हैं। कभी तोतली वाणी से कुछ कहने लगते हैं और कभी तात(पिता) को बुलाते हैं। सूरदास जी कहते है श्रीहरिकी यह शोभा माता यशोदा अपलक देख रहीं है अर्थात कृष्ण की ऐसी क्रीणाओ और रूप सौन्दर्य को माता यशोदा एक पल के लिए भी देखना छोड़ना नहीं चाहती हैं।
Meaning-In this verse, Surdas Ji describes the childhood antics of Shri Krishna. Surdas Ji says that Shri Krishna is eating butter and getting annoyed. His eyes are red, his eyebrows are furrowed, and he keeps yawning as if he is sleepy. Crawling on his knees, the sweet sound of his anklets jingles, and his body is covered in dust. Sometimes, he bends over and pulls his hair, bringing tears to his eyes. Sometimes, he speaks in his baby language, and sometimes he calls for his father. Surdas Ji says that Mother Yashoda is watching this splendour of Shri Hari(Lord Krishna) without blinking, meaning she does not want to miss even a moment of Krishna’s playfulness and beauty.
3. मैया मेरी, चंद्र खिलौना लैहौं ।।
धौरी को पय पान न करिहौं, बेनी सिर न गुथैहौं।
मोतिन माल न धरिहौं उर पर, झुंगली कंठ न लैहौं ।।
जैहों लोट अबहिं धरनी पर, तेरी गोद न ऐहौं।
लाल कहैहौं नंद बबा को, तेरो सुत न कहैहौं ।।
कान लाय कछु कहत जसोदा, दाउहिं नाहिं सुनैहौं।
चंदा हूँ ते अति सुंदर तोहिं, नवल दुलहिया ब्यैहौं।।
तेरी सौं मेरी सुन मैया, अबहीं ब्याहन जैहौं।
‘सूरदास’ सब सखा बराती, नूतन मंगल गैहाँ ।।
अर्थ-प्रस्तुत पद में सूरदास जी ने श्रीकृष्ण की ज़िद का बहुत ही सुंदर चित्रण किया है। कन्हैया अपनी माता से ज़िद करते हुए कहते हैं कि “मैया! मैं तो चंद्र रूपी खिलौना ही लूंगा।” और यदि यह खिलौना उन्हें नहीं मिला तो वे न तो धौरी गाय का दूध पियेंगे और न ही अपने सिर में चोटी गुथवाएंगे। मोतियों की माला भी गले में नहीं पहनेंगे और कुर्ता गले में नही डालेंगे । यदि चन्द्रमाँ-रुपी खिलौना नही दिया तो अभी पृथ्वी (धरती) पर लेट जाएंगे लेकिन माता की गोद में नहीं आएंगे। इसके साथ ही वह नंदबाबा के पुत्र कहलाएंगे पर यशोदा पुत्र नही कहलाएंगे। कृष्ण को ज्यादा ज़िद करते देख उन्हें शांत कराने के लिए माता यशोदा उनके कान में कहती है कि कही बलराम न सुन ले। वे कहती हैं -“मै तो तेरे लिए चत्रमा से से भी सुंदर दुल्हन लाऊँगी।” इतना सुनते ही बालक कृष्ण प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं और माता से तुरंत शादी कराये जाने को कहते हैं। सूरदास जी कहते हैं कि श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं कि मेरे सभी सखा बराती बनकर विवाह के मंगल गीत गाएंगे।
Meaning- In this verse, Surdas Ji beautifully depicts the persistence of Shri Krishna. Kanhaiya insists to his mother, “Maiya! I want a toy that looks like the moon.” If he doesn’t get this toy, he refuses to drink the milk of the white cow, have his hair braided, wear the pearl necklace, or put on the kurta. He threatens to lie down on the ground and not come into his mother’s lap unless he is given the moon-like toy. He also declares that he will call himself Nand Baba’s son but not Yashoda’s son. Seeing Krishna’s increasing persistence, Yashoda Ma tries to calm him down by whispering in his ear, afraid that Balaram might overhear. She says, “I will bring you a bride more beautiful than the moon.” Hearing this, little Krishna becomes happy and asks his mother to arrange the wedding immediately. Surdas Ji describes how Shri Krishna then tells her that all his friends will be the wedding guests and will sing auspicious wedding songs.
